Activities and Events

There are heaps of things to see and do in Kaikoura and the surrounding area. Here are a few of our best suggestions:

Activities:

Skiing at Mt Lyford (Winter only)

Whalewatch – Kaikoura’s most famous attraction! Whales can be viewed year round and trips run several times each day depending on demand and the weather conditions.

Dolphin Encounter – swim with or view the pods of up to 500 beautiful dusky dolphins.

Fishing – Try your hand at deep-sea fishing or catch your own crayfish (Kaikoura’s specialty) for dinner!

Wings over Whales – scenic flight to view the whales from the air.

Dive Kaikoura - Trips and PADI courses available for all abilities.

Sea Kayaking - half day tours available around the peninsula seal colony

Horse trekking – one hour, two hour or sunset treks through native bushland.

Pilot a plane – fly your own plane over scenic Kaikoura with expert tuition.

Maori tours – learn about local Maori culture and participate in protocol.

4 wheeler tours - Quad biking through 1600 acres of stunning coastal farmland

Swimming with seals

Most tours and activities can be booked at reception at no extra charge; however in high season we recommend you book dolphin swimming 2 weeks ahead.

There are numerous hikes and trails in the area, from the gentle peninsula walkway to a challenging day walk to the summit of Mt Fyffe, to the stunning Kaikoura Wilderness Walkway (2 days).

Events:

Kaikoura Race day held annually on Marlborough Anniversary Day. The feature race of the day is the DB Draught Kaikoura Cup, with a stake of $30,000. Always a great atmosphere.

SEAFEST: Kaikoura's own ‘Oktoberfest’ featuring wine and food from the region. First Saturday in October annually. http://www.seafest.co.nz/seafest

ROOTS: Kaikoura’s own roots music festival in January features a contemporary line up
of original roots, reggae, dancehall, dub and jungle artists.: http://www.kaikourarootsfest.co.nz
